Catching Up With Toronto Creative: Mrinal Dhase
Meet Canadian creative Mrinal Dhase - a multi-disciplinary artist originally from Mumbai that now calls Toronto home. We caught up with Mrinal in her lovely apartment downtown, where she told us about her love for the city, her favourite Daysuit and what she’s looking forward to this spring.
Studio: Tell us a little bit about yourself - who you are, where you're from and what you do.
MD: Hi there! My name is Mrinal (pronounced MRI - NAAL), and I’m a multidisciplinary artist and designer. I currently live in Toronto, but I was born in Mumbai, India, and my ethnic background is Marathi. Professionally, I bounce between graphic design, art direction, content creation and other creative pursuits, and I’m equally passionate about fashion, music, the visual arts, history, and travel. I’m also a vocalist with training in Hindustani classical music, but I love singing in other genres as well!
Studio: Briefly describe your style and how does the Daysuit compliment your fashion aesthetic?
MD: I’d describe my style as classic with an edge. I absolutely adore pieces with clean, timeless silhouettes because you can wear them in so many ways and on their own. I’ve also recently been prioritizing comfort wherever I can! I usually choose to pair classic, elegant pieces with something more “rebellious,” like a cool leather jacket, distressed denim, bold/layered jewellery or even an edgier makeup look. The Daysuit fits into my wardrobe perfectly because it is the versatile silhouette I look for to dress up for a summer event with a blazer and a cute bag, or wear as is with my favourite sneakers for a nice walk by the water
Studio: With spring in full swing, what activities are you looking forward to the most? Fave places in the city? Hidden gems you want to gate keep but can't anymore?
MD: Spring in Toronto is so short but so sweet! Like everyone, I always look forward to seeing the cherry blossom trees in full bloom at High Park and just all around the city. I love flowers, and Osgoode Hall has one of the most stunning flower gardens when the weather gets warm, and against the backdrop of the gorgeous landmark architecture (completed in 1832!), it's one of my favourite places to have a picnic and journal or read. Of course, I’m also super excited about patio season, and some of my favourite (most aesthetically pleasing) patios around the city are at Chotto Matte, Milou, Harriet’s Rooftop and the Gardiner Museum’s Clay restaurant patio. There are so many more restaurants I’m looking forward to trying this spring! Lastly, going to the Toronto Island beaches is a really nice break from the city and can be really peaceful if you avoid the crowded areas. I love seeing the swans, and gorgeous natural scenery while being just a quick ferry ride away from home.
Studio: What's next on the horizon for you?
MD: I have a couple different things on the horizon, one of them being YouTube. I always wanted to start a channel but I’ve been too fearful. I finally feel ready though— stay tuned if you’re into thrifting, travel, and fun Toronto vlogs! I am also looking to get more into Art Direction, as well as sharing more of my creative work online for my small business, Studio 333!
